Briliant experience.

Anyway the aim is to help provide tools for people to write academic papers successfully through my own experiences as a student who went from academic probation (being asked to take a year off) and now an honours student.

One of the more basic ideas of an academic paper that I struggled with is the idea of being assertive. This is often reflected in a tendency to use uncertain language such as ‘Would’ ‘Could’ Etc. Now perhaps if I were a better grammarian, I would be able to tell you exactly what those sorts of words were and how to better apply this, but to be honest it doesn’t matter. If there’s anything that I can tell a aspiring academic is that grammar aids itself to writing, not that grammar constructs critical thinking. The important function is that you have an understanding in which demands the functionality of grammar.

We arrive at the use of ‘Would’ and ‘Could.’ More often than not, they add nothing to the understanding of a concept. Most commonly I found myself saying something along the lines of “This would lead someone to believe…” “This would indicate…” which adds a level of uncertainty and disconnect between the writer and the purpose of the words to follow.

The fix is more internal than it is a complication of grammar. Would/Could is simply changing the tense that the word is written in, thus to make the alternation simply delete the word and change the verb to match the subject.

Turning “This Would indicate…” into “This indicates…”

Everything will sound and look so much better.

The same method, CTRL-F and make the simple changes to make your language assertive and clear. This gets to the real crux of what I want to say. The more important thing for writers to remember is that you have an opinion, and it is that opinion in which makes your writing valuable. Academia is an institution based on the construction of evidence based opinions, and having confidence in your opinion is a big part of becoming a scholar.

I meant to write this last week, but I was so busy with graduate school applications and the TRU Undergraduate PHP conference.
