To keep a long story short Lil Jon leads me to a music video for an artist(band? not really sure) called Swedish House Mafia with their &#8216;Greyhound&#8217; song.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Swedish House Mafia - Greyhound - Extended Video Remix HD\" width=\"1050\" height=\"591\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/f3XlIQ5pmdQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption>For those interested this is the video in question. Don&#8217;t click if you don&#8217;t like electonic(\/house) music.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-regular-font-size\">I&#8217;m sure these folks are popular because their video had a fair following but I live under a rock. Nonetheless this video (after a string of incredibly intriguing videos) in particular had me thinking about something. In it there are these fairly generic looking folks appearing to be using a Virtual Reality Immersion device to play a DJ Game of some sorts that controls racing mechanical greyhounds that are being observed by the most &#8220;Hunger Games&#8221;-esque fashion I&#8217;ve seen outside of that set of young adult films. This connection between the DJs playing some game or competition and the ridiculous fashion correlated with my passion for MMORPGs(Massive Multiplayer Online Roleplaying Games).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-regular-font-size\">I think MMOs have seen a real surge in interest in the public. Through an accessibility to computer technology sufficiently advanced, the development of highspeed internet connection, and the destigmatization of video games (and nerd culture in general) has led to a the broadening of the audience for MMOs. The Film Ready Player One shows the ultimate result of our rapidly globalized and connected world for the better or for the worst. One thing I want (MMO)-unordained observers to pay attention to in particular is the scene in which Parcival first enters the Oaisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"opening scene the OASIS intro  Ready Player One 2018 1080p Blu-ray\" width=\"1050\" height=\"591\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/E0wSrXBT_c0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption>This move (this scene in particular) says so much about video game culture.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-regular-font-size\">While I find the whole movie (and book) such an incredible expression of Video Game culture, immediately pertainning to the topic of this post is at 2:21 of the link I posted above. The Narrator (Parcival in this instance) says &#8220;People come to the Oasis for all the things they can do, but they stay for all the things they can be. Tall, beautiful, scary, a different sex&#8230; &#8221; etc. &#8220;It&#8217;s all your call.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-regular-font-size\">This is something that is largely not discussed about video game culture, is the ability to be and in particular wear what ever you want. Of course there are systematic limitations that are provided by the developers (Costumes, Outfits, Armor, etc.) the ability to wear what you want, when you want and present yourself how ever you feel is something that has made video games a home for many who struggled to express themselves elsewise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-regular-font-size\">Now, were that I could, I would love to share my favourite outfits (and armor sets) on the first MMO I began playing when I was around 10, Runescape but  the aesthetic is hard on the eyes in 2020. The next worst example I can provide easily is Guild Wars which I began playing when I was 11 or 12. Guild Wars is also the first game I began playing fairly seriously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-circle-mask\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/mindofthelost.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/image-1-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-141\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mindofthelost.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/image-1-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/mindofthelost.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/image-1-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/mindofthelost.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/image-1-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/mindofthelost.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/image-1-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/mindofthelost.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/image-1.png 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>This is my Monk &#8211; <em>Holy Saint Alex<\/em> &#8211; My &#8216;Main&#8217; character.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-regular-font-size\">Guild Wars is perhaps an interesting case that at the time was not necessarily typical of MMOs at the time with an emphasis on the aesthetics of equipment (armor\/clothing and weapons) rather than the power of equipment. The equipment necessary for the most difficult content of the game was incredibly easy to acquire. Before you&#8217;re max level (Which is also exceptionally low compared to other games) you&#8217;ll likely have acquired or gathered enough materials to make it yourself. Thus the reason to continue playing the game at the maximum difficulty is purely for aesthetics. Now the above gear that my monk is wearing is not even the most difficult equipment to get in terms of cost (time spent). While the effort required for that equipment is much more than the basic gear required, it took perhaps about 2 weeks of afterschool gameplay to acquire the materials through collection, be that killing monsters and completing quests or purchasing the gear through sale of other things acquired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-style-circle-mask\"><img loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/mindofthelost.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/image-2-1024x576.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-142\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mindofthelost.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/image-2-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/mindofthelost.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/image-2-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/mindofthelost.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/image-2-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/mindofthelost.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/image-2-1536x864.png 1536w, https:\/\/mindofthelost.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/image-2.png 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>My Ranger &#8211; <em>Luxon Ranger Alex<\/em> &#8211; wearing the most expensive outfit I acquired &#8211; Vabbian<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-regular-font-size\">The above gear required a moderate amount of exceptionally rare materials which can only be gathered through specific means (or purchase from other players who acquired them) and perhaps took two to three weeks to acquire.  Which isn&#8217;t even the hardest to obtain gear. That rare set, Obsidian Armor (Which I never obtained, I think it&#8217;s ugly), was only able to be obtained through a serious time commitment of successfully completing the two most difficult scenarios (dungeon) which involved an incredibly skill based speed completion or an incredibly time consuming quests that could take upwards 1-2 hours per completion after learning the strategies required to complete it. The other option is to complete other tasks in the game to acquire funds to purchase the necessary materials which is the most common route that I saw other players take. It&#8217;s called Microtransactions today, and for those unordained, it is a system in which charges you real world currency to purchase an exclusive ingame currency for content that can only be purchased by that currency, hence exclusive. Now there&#8217;s a moral dilemna for another day but above is perhaps the first character I took to the difficulter content that I commited time to learn and play. She is wearing a costume that was unlocked for my whole account much later, but wielding a weapon only acquirable through exclusive content. Regardless, both these purchases and content completion display a certain commitment to the game that visually signalled to other players that I was commited to the game (or pessimistically I liked the game enough to spend more money on it than the initial purchase of the game).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-regular-font-size\">Which brings me to something so important about video game fashion, and lets be honest it is a virtual expression of fashion. The thing I can&#8217;t show is how different every player will look which is why we return to Ready Player One. If you watch the scene, people choose to portray themselves as anything and everything. The possibilities are endless and the creative universes of game develops offers a new way in which people can present themselves each time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-3 wanted to be really extra I could show you all my favourite costumes on each of these characters. Guild Wars 2 (and Guild Wars 1 Actually) is called Fashion Wars for a reason.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-regular-font-size\">In games such as Guild Wars 2 and World of Warcraft (Didn&#8217;t really play, sorry~!), players are introduced to the choice of playing non-human and sometimes not even humanoid or bipedal characters. A animal studies student might suggest this enforces or deconstructs the anthropocentric emphasis of western culture, but I like to think the gradual introduction to creative ways of portraying oneself has contributed to the global culture an understanding of acceptance and inclusion. I of course cannot sit here and tell you factually that &#8220;Video Game Fashion untrains horrible bigoted and racist people,&#8221; because those people exist in video games too. They are a part of an increasingly global community as well, but in video gaming we see the reflection of an incredibly diverse people who are able to present themselves virtually (in both the literal and metaphysical sense) uniquely, which is similar to fundamentally what I see is the purpose behind fashion. Ready Player One&#8217;s film is an excellent introduction to video game culture, but emphasizes only one of the many facets of video game culture.
